Born on May 5, 1892 in Hampton, GA, Emory Marvin Hobbs was 1 of 10 children. The family moved to Lynn Haven in 1910.

Mr Hobbs worked in the turpine business and then went to work as a bridgebuilder on the old DuPont Bridge (now called the Tyndall Bridge).
He built his first boat in 1944 at Parker Bayou. He continued to build vessels such as the "Clipper", "Gulf Clipper", "Gulf Pride", and "Gulf Prince". Mr Hobbs continued to run his fleet of ships until his health began to decline.
